KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 16.51 g, 12 h), struck posthumously, Mesembria, circa 175-125. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on a backless throne, holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter with his left; below eagle, crested helmet above ΔΙ; below throne, ΒΥ. Callataÿ Group 2, (D27/R1). HGC 3, 1569. Karayotov I 250 (O72/R245). Price 1072. Beautiful light toning; struck on a large flan. Reverse slightly doublestruck, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex Gorny & Mosch 244, 6 March 2017, 182.

The presence of the control BY on the reverse, clearly reminds us of the contemporary posthumous issues of Lysimachos, which were struck in Byzantion. Contrary to the Byzantion issues, where the BY is the start of the ethnikon, on the present example, the BY has to stand for a Mesembrian magistrate, especially since the city is also identified by its traditional "mintmark", the crested helmet.
