Lot 351

CYPRUS. Amathos. Evagoras, circa 391-386 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 19.5 mm, 6.67 g, 12 h). Lion lying to right; above, eagle flying to right; below, E. Rev. Forepart of roaring lion to right. Amandry, Amathonte 127 (D1/R-, unpublished reverse die) = BMC 7-8 (this obverse die). Tziambazis 6 var. (no symbols or letters on the reverse). Zapeiti & Michaelidou 13. Very rare. Unusually clear and well-struck. About extremely fine.

This is an example of the very scarce series of Staters, struck by Evagoras; Only a single obverse die and just 3 reverse dies (now four?) were used to strike the whole series of staters of this King of Amathos! This would practically mean that the maximum of 30,000 coins were struck. From this amount, less than 20 are known to have survived.
