KORKYRA. Korkyra. Circa 229-48 BC. (Bronze, 18.5 mm, 6.42 g, 10 h). Wreathed head of Dionysos to right. Rev. Amphora; above, grape bunch; in the left field, (KOP) monogram. BMC 423-4. HGC 6, 83 corr. (kantharos). Joy 336. Dark green patina. Light deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the Vineyard collection, ex Classical Numismatic Group 61 (25 September 2002), 220 (part of).

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
